The Senior School
Students completing their senior schooling at Foundation Christian College continue in an environment of support, care and resourcing to allow them to move onto University entry, TAFE entry or Workplace transition. In their own specialised Senior School Centre, with laptop access, they can work to a flexible timetable strengthening their skills in independent learning. Senior school studies allow students to work and graduate in compliance with the new courses of study.

The new Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) will:
  • Extend the Outcomes-Based Education of Kindergarten to Year 10 to include Years 11 and 12.
  • Be flexible and won’t lock students into pathways
  • Have one system of curriculum with consistent standards and one system of assessment
  • Provide a single standards framework (from levels 4 – 8), so that parents, students, tertiary institutions and employers can see what level the student has achieved for each course.
  • Keep the best features of the current system, like Vocational Education and Training (VET).
  • Have the choice of up to 50 new courses of study.
The new Courses of Study: (being phased in from 2006 – 2010)
  • Can be used for a TER and can all count towards selection for university, TAFE and other providers
  • Provide students with more choice, as in other Australian states.
  • Allow students in special programs (like media, sports and aviation) to use those courses to contribute to their TER.
  • Introduce new areas of study, like Aboriginal and Intercultural Studies, Earth and Environmental Science; Psychology; and Philosophy and Ethics.
  • Have course content that is more up-to-date, relevant, challenging and engaging for students.
It is now a legal requirement that students must be engaged in some form of education or training if they choose to leave school before the age of 17.

How Do I graduate?
All Courses of Study will have five comparable levels of achievement (level 4 – 8). Level 6 in one course will equal a level 6 in another course. Student achievement will be assessed against these clearly defined levels.

The Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) will be issued only to students who meet all the requirements for secondary graduation as detailed below:
  • Complete at least ten full year (or equivalent) Curriculum Council subjects.
  • Obtain an average grade of C or better in at least eight full year (or equivalent) Curriculum Council subjects, with at least four of the full year (or equivalent) subjects at Year 12 level.
  • Achieve English language competence. This is done by achieving a ‘C’ grade or higher in the Curriculum Council English Course of Study.

At the end of senior secondary studies (Year 12), students will receive a Folio of Achievement containing:
  • a WACE (if attained)
  • a Record of Achievement
  • acknowledgement of English Language Competency
  • a Course of Study Report for each course studied
  • VET Units of Competency and/or VET qualifications (if attained)
  • Community Service of 20 hours (from 2008)
